One of the more interesting conversations at our Hollywood/Tech panel in Menlo Park last week, was which drives innovation first, technology or Hollywood. In other words, does Hollywood come up with the ideas and imaginative futures through film and then Tech is inspired and builds what they’ve seen? Or are engineers in tech influenced by books and storytelling of their youth, build what they dream and then Hollywood learns from their developments?
Saad Khan, angel investor in both tech and Hollywood films, made a great point: that many of todays innovations came from stories told from childhood in many of the sci-fi books and comics people read growing up. So the answer is that both movie story tellers and tech leaders are equally influenced by the stories the were raised on. He believes now is the golden era for technologists, influenced by their childhood memories, to make these far out ideas become a reality. Perhaps all the Star Trek movies, Back to the Future films, and superhero books and movies might have a strong influence on both Hollywood and technology leaders today??
Another major point of the discussion from panelists was the common thread of passion. Startups and films get funding for the passion and grit each creator or entrepreneur evokes to investors. Doing a startup or creating a film takes a lot of hard work, multiple hat wearing aka roles to play, and unusually more down days than up days in the beginning. What keeps entrepreneurs and film-makers going is their passion to see their creation come to fruition. Hopefully, along the journey, there are glimpses of the masterpiece your building, to keep you motivated and excited about the overall vision of your desired outcome.
We plan on hosting more events like this in the near future. Feel free to join our Meetup group and get notified the next time a Hollywood/Tech meeting occurs: http://www.meetup.com/Silicon-Valley-FilmTech/events/224264123/
